Meet the Boys πŸ“

Every great flock is run by a handsome, opinionated gentleman. These are the feathered fathers behind our Founder's Hatch crosses. Loud, proud, and undeniably fabulous.

Big Man
Head Rooster

Big Man

a.k.a. The Fluff Emperor

Salmon Faverolles

🧬 Purebred

"I run this yard, and my beard is bigger than yours."

Big Man is our founding sire and the fluffy patriarch behind every Founder's Hatch cross. Sporting a magnificent muffed beard, feathered legs, and five majestic toes, he struts like he owns the place β€” because, frankly, he does. Gentle with the ladies, tolerant of the humans, and absolutely convinced he's the most handsome bird in three counties.

Regal, fluffy, mildly dramatic

Favorite thing: Announcing sunrise 40 minutes early

Rusty
The Cream Dream

Rusty

a.k.a. The Cream Dream

Cream Legbar

🧬 Purebred

"Blue eggs, good looks, and a rusty swagger to match."

Rusty is our resident Cream Legbar gentleman β€” a purebred crele-barred beauty with cream and grey feathering shot through with warm rusty-orange across his shoulders and saddle. At 2 years old he's in his prime: alert, quick on his feet, and a fantastic forager who's always the first to sound the alarm when a hawk drifts overhead. His daughters throw those coveted sky-blue eggs, and he passes on that classic Legbar crest and easygoing charm. Handsome, watchful, and just a little bit vain about his tail.

Alert, dashing, protective

Favorite thing: Standing guard while the hens dust-bathe

Walker
Walker the Flock Ranger

Walker

a.k.a. Walker the Flock Ranger

Cream Legbar cross (dad: Rusty)

πŸ”€ Cross

"Built like a barn, humble like... well, not humble at all."

Walker is Rusty's son β€” and somehow already the alpha over his own dad, which is the kind of family drama we just don't ask about. Mom's contribution is a mystery (Rusty had a busy spring), so we know exactly half his story: pure mystery mixed with pure Rusty. What we do know is that Walker is HUGE. At roughly 18 months old he's all muscle, sporting a broad, powerful breast and a barred, speckled coat with glossy green-black tail feathers that would make any rooster jealous. He struts through the yard like he pays the mortgage, and the hens... well, they're impressed. So is Rusty, quietly, from a respectful distance.

Swole, confident, unbothered

Favorite thing: Flexing on his own father

Napoleon
The Tiny Tyrant

Napoleon

a.k.a. The Tiny Tyrant

Barbu de Watermael

🧬 Purebred

"Small bird, enormous opinions."

Napoleon is our purebred Barbu de Watermael β€” a pint-sized bearded Belgian bantam with a crest, a full fluffy beard, and an attitude roughly forty times his body weight. Unusually for a small breed, he's an absolute sweetheart to people, happy to be picked up and admired (as he feels he deserves). The big hens are another story: he rides around on the giant girls like they're a county fair attraction, crowing about his conquests to anyone who'll listen. There's just one small technicality β€” he can't quite... close the deal, if you catch our drift. But don't tell him that. As far as Napoleon is concerned, he runs this empire.

Bold, charming, delusionally confident

Favorite thing: Ordering hens three times his size around

🐣 On the farm since 2025

Alexander the Great
Alexander the Grape

Alexander the Great

a.k.a. Alexander the Grape

Barbu de Watermael

🧬 Purebred

"Small, mahogany-red, and fully fermented into fearlessness."

Alexander the Grape is our second purebred Barbu de Watermael β€” a bearded Belgian bantam poured into a richer color than his little cousin Napoleon: deep, wine-dark mahogany-red hackles melting into glossy green-black wings and a copper-flecked tail, like a bottle of something you'd cellar for decades. He's got that same signature Barbu combo of big personality and genuinely lovely manners with people, which is refreshingly rare for a small breed. The one key difference? He's not nearly as self-absorbed as Napoleon β€” Alexander will actually let another bird finish a sentence before going back to lording over his patch. He also lives up to his name in the most literal way possible: he's absolutely obsessed with the grapevine, and will happily pluck sour, unripe grapes straight off the vine all season long, no matter how many times we tell him to wait. A true empire-builder at heart, though so far his conquests are limited to the vineyard, the compost pile, and the best dust-bathing spot in the run. Whole lotta boldness crushed into one tiny, full-bodied bird.

Bold, friendly, refreshingly humble (for a Barbu)

Favorite thing: Sneaking sour, unripe grapes straight off the vine (yes, really β€” he's obsessed)

Jeremiah James
JJ

Jeremiah James

a.k.a. JJ

Sumatra

🧬 Purebred

"The barnyard's brooding gothic supermodel"

Jeremiah James is our resident Sumatra β€” a living piece of obsidian art. Draped in feathers that shimmer beetle-green and blue in the sun, he sweeps the barnyard with a tail longer than most roosters could dream of. Aloof, elegant, and endlessly dramatic, he struts the garden like it's a runway and he's the only model booked. Don't let the brooding gothic look fool you: underneath all that glossy black plumage is a curious, spirited boy who loves a good dust bath under the dogwood tree.

Aloof, elegant, and endlessly dramatic

Favorite thing: Dust baths under the dogwood tree

🐣 On the farm since 2024

Floyd
Pretty Boy Floyd

Floyd

a.k.a. Pretty Boy Floyd

Sumatra x Black Copper Marans cross

πŸ”€ Cross

"Black as midnight, lit from within like a struck match."

Floyd is our showstopping Sumatra x Black Copper Marans cross β€” a bird who looks like someone took a tuxedo and set it gently on fire. From his Sumatra side he inherited that flowing, cascading tail and gamey, alert elegance; from his Black Copper Marans side came the deep, brooding foundation of iridescent black plumage that glows green and teal in the sun. Where the two collide is pure magic: a blaze of copper, rust-orange and gold streaking through his hackles and saddle like embers caught in the wind. He carries himself with a quiet, watchful confidence β€” not loud, not showy, just supremely aware that he's the best-dressed bird in the yard and doesn't need to say a word about it. A superb forager and a vigilant guardian, Floyd keeps one eye on the sky and the other on his ladies at all times. Striking, self-possessed, and impossible to photograph badly.

Elegant, watchful, smoldering

Favorite thing: Catching the low afternoon sun so his feathers ignite

Winston
The Gentleman of the Yard

Winston

a.k.a. The Gentleman of the Yard

Barnyard Mix (parentage unknown)

πŸ”€ Cross

"A mystery in mahogany with a heart of gold."

Nobody's quite sure what Winston is, and honestly, we've stopped trying to figure it out β€” because whatever mix of breeds came together to make this boy, they got it exactly right. Draped in glossy black feathers shot through with fiery mahogany and copper, and finished with a proud red comb and a shimmering green-black tail, Winston looks like he was painted rather than hatched. But his looks are the least of his charms. Winston is, without a doubt, the sweetest boy on the farm. He melts into a hug, loves a good cuddle, and has appointed himself our official alarm clock β€” proudly crowing his heart out beneath the bedroom window at the first hint of dawn (whether we're ready for it or not). Part mystery, all gentleman, 100% loved.

Sweet, snuggly, and reliable

Favorite thing: Being the very first to crow β€” right under the bedroom window, every single morning

🐣 On the farm since 2026

Sterling
The Midnight Gentleman

Sterling

a.k.a. The Midnight Gentleman

SvarthΓΆna

🧬 Purebred

"Dressed for a black-tie gala he was never invited to."

Sterling is our SvarthΓΆna β€” the Swedish black hen breed β€” fibromelanistic from comb to toe, with dark skin, a slate-black face and iridescent feathers that flash green and blue in the sun. His hackles came in frosted with silver streaks, which is how he earned his name. He is quiet, deliberate, and faintly dramatic: he'll pose on a stump at golden hour like he's expecting a portrait session, then escort his hens to the best bug patch without a fuss. Rarely raises his voice, never raises a wing.

Calm, stately, quietly theatrical

Favorite thing: Catching the light so everyone can see the green shimmer in his feathers
