Sumatra
Smart, self-sufficient, and can actually fly
Sumatras may look like a showpiece, but they're one of the most self-sufficient, capable breeds on the farm. Originally from the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, they retain a striking amount of wild jungle-fowl instinct, and it shows in the best ways. These birds are genuine flyers. They can launch themselves vertically and take to the air with ease, roosting high and evading predators that ground-bound breeds can't. Paired with a sharp, almost eerie intelligence — a legacy of their close ties to their wild ancestors — they are exceptional at keeping themselves safe and thriving on range with minimal intervention. Sumatra hens are reliable layers of small white-to-tinted eggs and lay well even through winter. They go broody dependably and are outstanding, devoted mothers — attentive, protective, and fiercely capable of raising their own chicks. Both adults and chicks are remarkably hardy and rarely fall ill, showing strong natural resistance to common chicken ailments, including foot and crop issues. With lustrous beetle-green-black plumage, a long flowing tail, gypsy face, and multiple spurs, the Sumatra is as beautiful as it is tough. This is a smart, independent, weather-hardy homestead bird — not just a pretty face.
